Sleep apnea is a condition which, by definition, means "temporary cessation of breathing during sleep." These temporary pauses of breathing are generally caused by a narrowing or collapse of the upper airway. When the airway becomes narrow and breathing becomes diminished, some patients will describe symptoms such as snoring, waking up gasping for air, or waking up with a dry/scratchy throat. As a result of poor sleep, an untreated sleep apnea patient will often complain of symptoms such as frequent awakenings, non-refreshing sleep, morning headaches, or daytime fatigue.
